Quincy is so excited welcome a new designer to the boutique…Introducing Dear Frances!

Timeless and elegant, strong and independent, Dear Frances brings a unique and fresh vision to luxury footwear design.
The Quincy team were lucky enough have an exclusive interview the creative woman behind the label, Jane Frances. Read all about her newest collection, personal style and of course shoe design!
After studying in London and Milan, Australian designer Jane Frances took up an internship at a family-owned footwear factory in Italy. Here she trained in the artisan craft of footwear design under the guidance of her celebrated teacher and mentor. Today, Dear Frances shoes are still made by hand at the same factory, using the age-old techniques handed down through generations of artisan shoe makers.

So, tell us about your Spring 2017 collection…

Jane – ‘The development of Spring came from a study of opposites. I was interested in looking at the influence of the past on the present and of nature on modern design. In keeping with our aesthetic, I worked with timeless silhouettes such as lounge mules, classic ankle boots and minimalist heels, bringing them into a modern setting with a vibrant seasonal colour palette and refined textural fabrications. This season also sees the continued evolution of our best-selling Spirit Boots, as well as an exciting update to our signature perspex Float Heels.’

Who is the ‘Dear Frances’ woman?

Jane – ‘I see someone who is self assured and elegant. She has a mature approach to personal style and above all, an attractive sense of being.’

How did you get into being a shoe designer, is it something you always wanted to do?

Jane – ‘I’ve loved shoes and design, form, texture and tone since a very young age, as long as I can remember. However, it wasn’t until I explored these interests while studying that I truly realised my passion for shoe design and my desire to take it further.’

Tell us about the first shoe you ever designed?

Jane – ‘When I was a student in Milan, I designed a pair of shoes inspired by a table I had been admiring in one of the city’s beautiful design stores. It had clean lines with an intricate geometric pattern embossed into the legs. I was determined to translate the design into a pair of shoes and went about looking for a fine-artist, who would be willing to help me individually hand-paint the pattern onto wooden shoe heels. It took months to achieve the effect I was looking for, but the end result was just what I had pictured and made the entire process very satisfying. The design actually became part of our very first Spring collection.’

What is the most surprising or interesting thing you’ve learnt being a shoe designer?

Jane – ‘That just 1mm can make all the difference!’

How would you describe your personal style?

Jane – ‘I have a fairly clean aesthetic so generally wear sharp, monochrome pieces, like fitted jeans, a crisp white shirt, or structured tee. I also like to add some warmth and personality to an outfit, so a pop of colour or subtle details, which only I know I’m wearing are also nice.’

What was your last fashion purchase? And what is still on your wishlist?

Jane – ‘My latest purchase is a pair of beautiful ribbed woollen pants by Theory and I’m still pining after the most amazing cane bag by Swedish designer Palmgrens.’
